Day 059: River Water and Ice - Feb 28. A close up view of the water and ice chunks flowing down the Hudson River with blue skies reflected on the ice and water. To get a sense of scale of the ice, view in large size to see the gulls sitting on the ice in the lower third of the image.

NYC on Ice - Winter Blues

Day 058: New York Winter Blues - Feb 27. Gray skies all day but around noon time the scene took on a variety of blue hues when a pale blue appeared high in the sky and was reflected in the ice covered Hudson River and the New York Skyline buildings

Liberty State Park and One World Trade Center

Day 057: New York from New Jersey - Feb 26. A nice, warm day yesterday relatively speaking. Some sunshine and about 35 degree F. Downright balmy after the below zero temps that we've been experiencing. Took a drive to Liberty State Park in Jersey City so that I could have a walk along the waterfront. This image was shot from in front of the historic Central Railroad of New Jersey Terminal. The foreground lights are those that used to light old ferry slips and the background, across the Hudson River, is Lower Manhattan and One World Trade Center. Today back to gray skies and very cold temps.

Day 056: Goose-Atlantic Brant - Feb 25. Came across this Atlantic Brant foraging in the dried grasses and snow with a flock of about 30 others. Neat - first time that I've seen one.

Winter Freeze_ NY-NJ and Hudson River

Day 055: NY-NJ Hudson River Sundown - Feb 24. I'm falling behind on downloading images from my camera. This is from the weekend. Sundown golden color and blue shadows during sunset with Hoboken New Jersey in the foreground and lower Manhattan and One World Trade Center in the background. Note the amount of ice in the Hudson River and if you look into the background where the river flows into New York Harbor, you can see that the ice is coating the harbor as well.

Nj Meadowlands Winterscape

Day 054: Winterscape - Feb 23. An early morning shot yesterday in the New Jersey Meadowlands after a Saturday night snowfall. Beyond the last trees in the background the white continues where the land ends and the frozen marsh waters begin. Unfortunately the park trails were not accessible so I could not get beyond here to get more snow photos which I had hoped to do.

New York Skyline at Dawn

Day 052: New York Skyline- Dawn - Feb 21. Another stunning sight this morning as the sun rose in the east beyond the city and created a myriad of rich colors in the clouds and sky which were reflected in the ice-clogged Hudson River. It was another 15 minutes before the sun popped up over the city horizon and changed the colors completely to mostly gold and yellow. A pain in th neck that my lack of ability to sleep past 5:30 lately gets me out of bed early on these very cold days but it definitely has its benefits when I can get to see scenes like this.

NY Skyline Dawn

Day 051: New York Skyline- Dawn - Feb 20. The New York Skyline just after first light and about 45 minutes before sunrise this morning. Woke up early and couldn't get back to sleep. so got up to get photographs and found riich sky color and building reflections in the iced up Hudson River. I'm fascinated with the ice buildup as the river currents ebb and flow changing the amount and patterns of the ice on the river and how reflections show up that we don't normally see.

Great Falls National Park NJ

Day 050: Great Falls in Winter - Feb 19. Knowing that the Great Falls of the Passaic River in Paterson, New Jersey would be frozen with the frigid temperatures that we've been having, I decided to check it out today. I was disappointed not to see more ice over the cliff of the Falls but I guess that, since we haven't had much rain in previous months and also that the Passaic River is partially frozen, there wasn't much water flow down the Falls before the freeze. In any case, a pretty blue sky with reflected colors in the ice and water and some warm light from a bit of sunshine made it a worthwhile photo trip.

Chinese New Year Fireworks NYC

Day 049: Fireworks Chinese New Year - Feb 18. The festivities in celebration of Chinese New Year - The Year of the Goat - were set in motion with colorful lighting on the Empire State Building and a beautiful fireworks display on the Hudson River between New York and New Jersey. I wasn't aware of the planned fireworks and when I heard the noise, I hurriedly grabbed the camera, without time for a tripod, and was able to get a few hand-held shots before the display ended.

Day 048: Yellow Christmas Cactus Flower - Feb 17. My two Christmas Cactus plants are finally blooming - one a rich yellow and the other a red one.

NYC Cruise Ship Departing

Day 047: NYSkyline-Cruise Ship Norwegian Breakaway - Feb 16. The Norwegian Breakaway - indeed breaking away from the frigid temperatures, wind chills and icy Hudson River as she left port yesterday for warmer climates. After standing out in the bitter cold and wind to get a few photos of her departure, I definitely did a lot of wishful thinking about being on board.

Abstrast Golden Glass

Day 044: Abstract - Liquid Gold- Feb 13. Notced the warm light shining through this bottle of scotch and grabbed a couple of shots. Used a light Topaz paint filter to bring out the colors and reflections to create an abstract-impressionistic effect. Made an adjustment to lessen the filter effect of my original post since I wasn't happen with it.

NY Skyline-Empire State Building Sundown

Day 043: NYSkyline Sundown- Feb 12. Yesterday's sundown colors, light and reflections in the Hudson River of the Empire State Building and surrounding buildings. As much as I enjoy livng close enugh to be able to explore and photograph are variations in color and light of the skyline in various seasons and weather conditions, I surely do wish that I could jump start my brain to think of some different subjects in the cold, icy, gray, dreary weather.

Day 038: New York Skyline Sunrise - Feb 7. Yesterday's (Feb 6) sunrise was colorful and cold. Note the ice build up in the Hudson River. No more sunrise scenes for a while since we will have cloudy skies and stormy weather until Tuesday morning.

Melting snow and slippery roadways are the story this week as the sun melts the snow during the day and it refreezes in thin layers at night.

Canada Goose in Flight

Day 032: BIF-Canada Goose - Feb 1. Not the greatest BIF image but it made me laugh. This Canada Goose was the last of his flock to take to the air and he seemed to be calling out "Wait for me" - His take-off posture was rather clumsy and it did make me smile when I saw the image.
