NJ Cooper Mill in Autumn
Historic Cooper Gristmill, located on the Black River in Washington Township, Morris County, New Jersey surrounded by fall foliage. The original mill was built to mill grain into flour in the 1760s and since 1788 has had several ownerswith the present mill constructed in 1826 by Nathan Cooper. The mill continued to operate until 1913. The funtioning mill waterwheel power shafts and gears turn 2000 pound mill stones. A thriving community grew around the mill and was know as Milltown. The mill was one of several along the Black River at the time, including anther grist mill, an apple crushing mill, a mill to distill cider into whistey and one to process wool.
