General Store and Post Office Waterloo Village NJ

A vertical view of the stone building that served as general store and post office to the community of Waterloo Village NJ. The store was built in 1830 and a year later the Morris Canal opened with a section running along the banks where the store was located. Waterloo was the mid-point on the 107 mile canal journey between PA and Newark NJ and it became a favorite stopping point where the canal boats drivers to spend the night to refresh and to stock up on needed supplies. The ground level of the store offered shelves of household necessities while the top and basement levels were for storage. Large bags of grain from the gristmill and other items were dopped onto the canal boats via a pulley system from the top floor wnidow..

The United Methodist Church in Waterloo Village N.J. The personality of this charming little white church with the big steeple stands out even when surrounded by colorful autumn foliage. The historic church, located in Waterloo Village., was built in the mid 1800s and has been holding services continusoulsy since then.

The blakcsmith shop is one of the original buildings of the village which originated as a iron forge working community in 1700s. One of my 'must do' places to visit each fall. Love walking around and feeling steeped in the quiet and peacefulness, imagining what it must have been like to live in such a way so many centuries ago.

Springtime Nirvana N.J.

A beautiful tranquil place to immerse oneself in the beauty of Spring and relish the countryside calm and quiet. Here in this Waterloo village scene, the old stone village store and surrounding trees and shrubs, in lush pink and greens, are reflected in the Morris Canal along with the blue sky. .The blacksmith shop can be seen in the distance. It's difficult when walking the grounds of this preserved canal village, to not get lost in fantasies about what life must have been life in this past time and place. The village store , mill, blacksmith shop all are placed along the canal to service the canal barges that would stop at the village for supplies and rest. Above the canal and across a path up an embankment, the village church (where services are still held) and the big homes of the wealthy are located. Beyode that, farther back from the canal are the village workers homes and small farm plots.. Also, at the back of the two square mile property , there is now a more modern building and gazebo used fore events such as parties and weddings. As we were leaving in mid- afternoon, guests were arriving for a wedding - what a perfect day for it.

A blooming Kwanza cherry tree, spring greens and turquoise blue skies all reflected in the waters of the Morris Canal at Waterloo village, Stanhope New Jersey. A beautiful day for a day trip to the countryside of New Jersey and the best part a visit with my eldest daughter for the first time in a year. A happy, wonderful day.

Historic Blacksmith Shop NJ

In an early fall setting with the foliage just beginning to change color, the shop is in the foreground with the village store in the background on the left and a village home on the hill to the right. The 1790 forge was used by the blacksmith to make itmes such as iron trivets, candlesticks and cupboard latches.

The Village Church

A vertical landscape scene of the lovely white United Methodist Church in historic Waterloo Village. The simple clean lines of the white church ares set off by a deep blue sky and the rich colors of autumn foliage. This beautiful little church, located in historic Waterloo Village in Stanhope NJ, has a rich history. Built to be the place of worship for the developing canal village of Waterloo, the cornerstone was laid in 1859, celebrated by a group of about 600 people. The church, grounds and graveyard have been meticulously maintained in their original format. This charming church has functioned for more than 150 years and still holds Sunday services.
