Old Glory and the GW Bridge
A vertical format view of the American Flag momentarily at rest as it waves back and forth in the air, blowing with the breeze from the New Jersey tower of the George Washington Bridge. The largest free-flying USA Flag in the world, it has been displayed on national holidays since the Veteran's Day following World War II. The flag, which would cover a full-sized basketball court weights 450 pounds. Each star is three feet tall. It takes a dozen members of the Bridge maintenance staff, working in three teams, to ufurl the flag from its metal storage tube under the arch of the bridge. Tears to the flag are repaired by hand by the maintenance team.
