Intrepid Returns to NY
On October 2, 2008, the carrier Intrepid was celebrated as she returned to her berth at Pier 86 in NY after being in drydock for two years for repairs. The USS Intrepid was commissioned in August 1943 and was based at Pearl Harbor as part of the Pacific Fleet. She was decommissioned in 1947 and served as part of the Pacific Reserve Fleet. She was recommissioned in 1952 as part of the Atlantic fleet and participated in NASA recovery and later was stationed off the coast of Vietnam in the 1966. She was to be scraped in 1982 but the Intrepid Museum Foundation prevailed and she was made a floating museum on the Hudson River.
In 1986, Intrepid was designated a National Historic Landmark.
