Iris Collection 2013-Presby Memorial Iris Garden : Presby Memorial Iris Garden began a glorious season of bloom this week and I've already been out to begin to photograph portraits of the large variety of iris species that can be seen there. White it is pouring rain as I write this, I'm hoping that the weather will clear in the next days so that I can get back, enjoy viewing the flowers and add to my collection of photographs. Iris Garden in the Rain 2013 : Presby Memorial Iris Garden offered a magnificent richly colored and varied display of iris flowers this year. I was very happy to be able to spend time on a few different days there to photograph the blooms. On almost every one of those days, rain showers began within a few minutes of my arrival at the garden and I wound up taking many of the photographs trying to juggle the camera and an umbrella while getting quite wet. I decided to keep these 'Iris in the Rain' images in their own special folder. The rain and wind became too heavy on two of those days to continue for long but on another day, the sun peaked through after the rain and dried up many of the raindrops. Presby Memorial Iris Garden in the Rain 2012 : Presby Memorial Iris Gardens is a treasure for iris lovers, photographers, painters and anyone who enjoys seeing the wonderul rainbow of colors that these flowers provide. This year the blooms were spectacular from early through late May. I was lucky to be able to visit the gardens several times for a few hours and took more than 200 close up photos of the flowers in bloom. Twice, showers began just after I arrived providing the opportunity to take photos of the flowers with raindrops on them. They were such peaceful, lovely times in the gardens that I wanted to devote a separate gallery to those raindrop images. Iris Collection 2012 -Presby Memorial Iris Garden : The spectacular rainbow display of iris colors began early this year at Presby Memorial Iris Garden in Monclair N.J. This public garden is part of the Essex County park system and it seems to draw larger crowds of iris lovers, photographers and painters each year. I'm happy that I was able to visit several times over the course of two weeks this year to photograph the flowers as the blooms opened up. On two of those visits, rain showers interrupted my photography but within a short time provided wonderful fun photographing the flowers with raindrops on them. Those photos are in a separate collection, so please take a look at those as well by clicking on the Flower tab where you will see the Iris in the Rain folder. I've attempted to provide the names of each variety of iris but in some cases was not able to find a name or to verify the correct name, so if you see one that is incorrect or can provide a name, please let me know.

Presby; Memorial Iris Garden Close Up #2 : The iris are in bloom again at the Presby Memorial Iris Garden in Montclair N.J. and the beauty of the colors is, as usual, outstanding. I've had the pleasure of spending a few hours there over the past week and hope to get back again so do look for additions to this gallery. This is my third year photographing at the garden and, in spite of the challenges of wind and rain, it was joyful to be there and see these beautiful flowers again. Flowers - Cherry Blossoms : Japanese ornamental cherry trees and their blossoms have a long history and cultural significance. In this country each Spring, cherry blossom festivals abound in the NE such as those in Washington DC and Branchbrook Park in Newark NJ. Neighborhoods in my area of New Jersey are dotted with their gorgeous pink blooms for a short time. There are several varieties of cherry blossoms - the more commonly recognized one consisting of white blossoms with a pink tinge; the weeping cherry tree and then, those in the photos below which produce thick clusters of magnificently rich pink flowers. These, I believe, are of the Japanese Kanzanzakura variety. Flowers - Daffodils : Daffodils - one of the first blooms of the Spring season. Their cheerful faces and delicate hues of white and yellow bring a smile to my face every time I see them d dancing in the breeze. They are certainly a welcome reminder that the winter months have passed and warm weather is on the way. Flowers - Tulips : Tulips - one of the first joyful colors of Spring here in NJ. Starting with bouquets that show up in flower shops and supermarkets in March until they begin to bloom outdoors, their colors, graceful shapes and gentle scent warm the heart and soul. I've been lucky this year to see and photograph these beauties locally at their peak, especially the mix of red tulips and yellow daffodils in a garden at Secaucus NJ.

Sunflowers 2012 : Sunflowers New Jersey 2012: The N.J. Audubon S.A.V.E. program, in conjunction with N.J. farmers, is once again providing some spectacular sights in the countryside of New Jersey as the program sunflower fields are coming into bloom. The farmers grow and harvest the sunflower seeds for sale through the Audubon program to provide locally grown fresh bird seed. The sunflower seed sales provide income for the farmers and provide funds for N.J. Audubon grasslands and field restoration and preservation. One of the farms, in Augusta N.J., offers a wonderful sunflower maze and if one visits the maze there is a great little cafe and bakery to have lunch across the street from the maze called Rosaline's Farm and Bakery.

Flowers - Spring In Bloom : Spring is a joyous time in New Jersey for flower lovers. Heralded by the lovely blooms of the Forsythia, Cherry, Crabapple, Redbud and other flowering trees and shrubs beginning in mid-April they delight the senses with color, scent, and form. Early azaleas paint the landscape with luscious hues of pink and mauve and red. At the Van Vleck House and Garden in Montclair the Wisteria blooms in May. Peonies and Iris begin their blooming season in late May. This gallery was created in 2010 with samples of the gorgeous Spring color to be found and I hope to be adding more this year, 2011, each week as daffodils, tulips, iris, peony, rhododendron and other beauties begin to bloom. Rose Collection : Roses are one of the most beloved floral treasures of late spring and summer. This gallery is a collection of my favorite rose images. Some of these were taken outdoors in the natural setting of the roses and some were taken indoors as still life subjects. I especially like to do this during the winter months when I'm really needing something beautiful and colorful to remind me that spring and summer will eventually come. Flowers - Summer's Garden : Summer 2010 is upon us and what a joy to be out and about viewing and photographing the lovely flowers that summer brings as well as the creatures that visit gardens too. Starting with the daylilies and hydrangeas, I've enjoyed adding to my collection of photo flowers and hope to include many more in this gallery over the next weeks of summer. Many of these photos were taken at Richard DeKorte Park in Lyndhurst NJ and at Reed-Reeves Arboretum in Summit NJ.

Flowers - Sunflowers : Sunflowers have to be one of the most cheerful symbols of summer and an entire field of them is indeed a joyful sight. These photos were taken at several locations in N.J. where sunflowers are being grown for a N.J. Audubon conservation project that includes producing and selling locally grown sunflower seeds. Most were taken at the the N.J. Audubon Wattles Stewardship Center. For each 5 acres of sunflower plantings, 1 acre of grassland habitat is preserved for nesting birds. The Wattles Stewardship Center, the newest N.J. Audubon sanctuary, is a 51- acre property located in Warren County along the Musconetcong River. Although the buildings are private, a public parking area provides access to the property’s trails and adjacent wildlife management area managed by the NJ Division of Fish and Wildlife. The Center is part of a preservation effort that protects 350 acres of farmland. For more information about this project and the Center visit www.njaudubon.org. Flowers - Sunflowers 2011 : NJ Sunflowers in bloom: A sunflower field in full bloom is, indeed, a wonderful sight to behold. Once again this year, ths spectacular show dots the New Jersey landscape as a result of a NJ Audubon partnership with local New Jersey farmers to produce and grow local sunflower bird seed. This S.A,V.E. conservation project involves an agreement with local farmers that for each 5 acres of sunflower plantings, 1 acre of grassland habitat is preserved for nesting birds. Photographs taken of the S.A.V.E. field photographs are noted in the captions. Please remember that if you live in New Jersey and love to feed the birds, check out the N.J. Audubon website to find out where you can purchase this locally grown birdseed. This year, NJ Audubon has also partnered with some of the farmers to provide field trips for the public to view the fields and learn about the project from field trip guides. Some of the participants include the Derwood Farm fields in Hillsborough, the Brant Gibbs fields in Allamuchy and the Liberty farm in Augusta, NJ. If you should travel to the farm in Augusta to see the flowers, be sure to stop at Roseline's Farm and Bakery, just across the street for some of the best quiche and bakery products that you will find anywhere.

Flower Portraits : Flowers are without a doubt at the top of my list of favorite subjects to photograph. I love the colors, shapes, patterns and details of the many varieties that bloom in the Spring and Summer months in NJ. During winter months, I resort to indoor photos using natural window light for close ups and still life images. This gallery, only one of many that I have created to show my flower images, consists of a selection of close up images of.various types of flowers.
